Since the movie Julie and Julia was what spurred me on to finally start a blog, it seemed only proper that I start with a Boeuf Bourguignon review.
I decided, rather then the traditional, to try a soup version that I found in Martha Stewart Living Magazine called simply Boeuf Bourguignon Soup http://www.marthastewart.com/recipe/boeuf-bourguignon-soup. The recipe seemed easy at first glance, the picture was enough to drool over and it only called for one cup of wine, so I would have the whole rest of the bottle to myself!
It took about 3 1/2 hours from start to finish and I made a big loaf of garlic bread to sop up the juice. I was not very impressed with it the first day, there was so much fat from the short ribs and bacon that it felt greasy on my lips. After a night in the fridge I skimmed the fat off, reheated it and voila, much better for lunch today.
If I made it again I'd use another cut of beef with less fat, reduce the beef broth by one cup and increase the red wine to two cups (darn, less for me). It would be perfect to make the day ahead and can be frozen for up to a month.
It's not going on my list of great recipes, but a re-do may be in order for some time in the future.
